Breaking News

On two separate occassions, Mattel, Inc., the world's largest toy manufacturer, has recalled more than 18 million toys worldwide, including 9 million toys in the United States.

As recently as August 14, 2007, Mattel recalled more than 18 kinds of magnetic toys and an additional 436,000 made with lead paint. This recall took place only two weeks after Mattels initial of another nearly one million Chinese-made toys being sold in the United States.

The first recall, which took place on August 1, 2007, involved 1.5 million Chinese-made Dora the Explorer, Sesame Street, Elmo, Diego, Big Bird, and other children's toys. Concerns were raised that these products might contain excessive levels of lead. Eighty-one additional types of Fisher-Price toys sold in the U.S. since May of 2007 were included in the enormous recall.

According to Mattel, a Chinese subcontractor violated Mattel's quality standards and used paint from an unapproved third-party supplier at its plant in southern China. After the recall, Chinese officials temporarily banned the manufacturer in question, Lee Der Industrial Co., from exporting further products.

Bryan Stockton, executive vice-president of Mattel, has not ruled out the possibility of further recalls. Stockton has also stated that while Mattel is now testing every batch of toys made in China and elsewhere, the company will continue to manufacture goods in China.
